Description:
An earthenware jug printed in blue underglaze with the Fisherman and Castle pattern. An alternate name for this pattern is “Chinaman with Dip Net.” This complex wrap around pattern is named for the principal figure holding a large net at the end of a rather long pole. It is unmarked. The outer Chinoiserie border is made up of geometric motifs with oriental symbols. The inner border design consists of an unusual combination of sunflowers and Greek linear designs. The central pattern is a good example of transitional Chinoiserie in which the engraver combines Oriental figures with a Continental setting with castle ruins and classic building. IThe pattern is recorded in the TCC Pattern Database. A mug printed with this same pattern is also in this collection; see item J148.
Condition:  Very Good. One small restoration to the base of the jug.
