An elegantly shaped earthenware jug printed in blue underglaze with the Buffalo pattern. The handle is molded and stylized. Buffalo is one of the earliest Chinoiserie patterns and was made by several different potteries in the late 18th century. Its popularity continued for about 50 years. The variations in the pattern, labeled A-E have been analyzed by Copeland (Chapter 11). The pattern on this jug is most similar to Buffalo type B, as designated by Robert Copeland.
This jug does not have a maker’s mark but it does have a blue printers mark and may be attributed to Spode.
