Jug, Chinese Fisherman

Item Number: J171
Shape Type: Jug
Pattern Name: Chinese Fisherman
Date: c. 1810-1820
Dimensions: H 12″
Maker: Brameld
Maker’s Mark: Unmarked
Description:
A large earthenware jug with one of the earliest Brameld patterns “doubled up” and repeated many times over the surface of the jug. It has a floral border. The jug was inscribed JOSEPH AND ELIZABETH/CLEGG/1809 in a heart-shaped cartouche under the spout, but the inscription appears to be in cold (unfired) gilding, as a result, most of it is worn away. Alwyn & Angela Cox state that the pattern has been identified as Brameld on the basis of sherds from the factory site.
Condition: Very Good. One small chip on the spout has been professionally restored
