Description:
This pattern is a good example of late transitional Chinoiserie style. It presents a lakeside setting with a highly ornate pagoda in a lush garden, a parasol figure and a large jardinière with flowers, all framed with a floral and scroll border. Along with others like Ornate Summer House, also by an unknown maker, and Clews’ Weeping Willow Border Series, these designs can be considered precursors to what would become patterns that exhibit a more romanticized idea of Chinese landscape and genre scenes popular during the Romantic Period.
The hamlet of Penpillick, inscribed on the jug, is in Cornwall. While one might suppose that the jug would have been ordered from a factory regionally situated near this village, it is impossible for me to speculate as to the factory that might have made it. The rhyme found on the jug is referenced in Baker’s 1984 book titled Sunderland Pottery, p. 132. It is rhyme #318 and is known to have been used on Sunderland wares.
