Description:
A baluster shaped earthenware jar with both an outer and inner lid. It was printed in black with some colors painted in underglaze and others enameled overglaze. While the central design is similar to New Hall’s porcelain version, the border pattern of decorative cartouches containing small floral sprays is quite distinct. An ornithological design was added on each side between the main pattern to enhance the overall appearance of the jar. It is an exceptional example of this well-known pattern printed on earthenware instead of porcelain.
This piece is documented in Chinoiserie Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style 1750-1900 by Halliday & Zeller, 2018, see page 242.
Condition:
Very good. A small chip to the rim of the jar has been professionally restored.
