A pair of earthenware dessert plates printed in blue underglaze in the Elephant pattern. The border is printed in a floral pattern that has been beautifully enameled overglaze in tones of rust, rust red, pink, and gold. The pattern for the border was made for an indented plate, but it was printed on a round biscuit. This pattern was more commonly found in blue without the added colors and was used for dinnerware. The design consists of an elephant and his trainer standing near a lake in a garden or zoo-like setting. A large gazebo sits high on a rock on the left side of the image. The large floral border consists of flowers and leaves with a small outer border of geometric design. The impressed ROGERS mark may have been used up to 1834; however, it was more commonly used c. 1800-1820.
