Description:
An earthenware dinner plate printed with the Chinese Fishermen pattern. The pattern incorporates numerous Chinoiserie elements but the central focus is on the tall standing figure wearing an unusual turban-like striped hat and holding a fish and a pole upon which hangs a basket. This figure is accompanied by two other seated fishermen. Another unusual feature is the flowering cactus that grows on top of a rock in the upper left side of the pattern. While the maker of this example is unknown, the plate has an impressed retailer’s “DONOVAN” mark for James Donovan a successful glass and china merchant and decorator at George’s Quay, Dublin, Ireland.
Condition: Very Good: One very small firing mark on the front edge and stilt marks on the back.
