Description:
An earthenware dinner plate printed in blue with the View of the Imperial Park at Gehol pattern. Note the border includes dragons as well as flowers and scrolls. The pattern is from a source print titled “View in the Eastern Side of the Imperial Park at Gehol” by William Alexander, included in John Barrow’s Travels in China, London, 1804. This pattern is one of the patterns discovered at President James Madison’s estate and was used by the Madison family. The pattern is included in Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style, 1750-1900, by R. Halliday and L. Zeller, Gomer Press, 2018.
Condition: Very Good: some rubbing around the plate’s rim.
