Plate, The Chinese Gardener

Item Number: P151
Shape Type: Dinner Plate
Pattern Name: The Chinese Gardener
Date: c.1820-1830
Dimensions: D 10″
Maker: Wood & Brettell
Maker’s Mark: ImpressedDescription:
The color on the plate was described as “steely blue,” similar to the color on a jug, also in this collection. The pattern may have been misnamed when it first appeared in the FOB Bulletin back in 1974, because the figure standing in the doorway is not holding a gardening tool, but a wand with a four-pointed star at the top. The figure also holds a large pot or jardiniere with two large flowers. Indeed, the latter may have been the reason for the pattern’s name. See also J119 in this collection for a ewer with printed with the same pattern.
Condition: Very Good: Some slight discoloration easily cleaned.
