Description:
This earthenware plate has a line engraved pattern known as Conversation. Similar examples are known with an impressed mark “LP” for Leeds Pottery. John Griffin believes this to be the earliest mark used by the Leeds Pottery. An example of the pattern with the full name of the maker is found in Friends of Blue Bulletin #23 on a jug. Two of the pattern elements that distinguish this version of the pattern from others are the small willow tree in the upper left space and the “club-like” finial on the roof of the large pagoda near the right side of the bridge. This version of the pattern has the “conversation” on the bridge whereas Caughley is the only known factory that placed the two figures in reserve in the garden.
Condition: Very good.
