Description:
An earthenware platter. The dark blue underglaze printed pattern is one of a previously unidentified series found on dinner ware.  Williams referred to it as having a “scroll and floral border.” See Friends of Blue Bulletin #63, p.2 and #90,p. 8 for more in this previously unidentified series pattern. The double border consists of a wide outer floral pattern and a second stylized scroll inner border that frames an imaginary oriental scene. Six patterns are currently known in this series, a second of which is also in the collection. This example is marked with an impressed geometric mark associated with the Joseph Heath & Co. pottery. However, the mark was used prior to Heath by Thomas Ingelby & Co. (1835-36) also at High Street Pottery, Tunstall. See “Gothic Beauties” #01 in the TCC database for more information regarding earlier use of the propeller mark. “Oriental Fantasy Scenes” is a TCC assigned name. Given the dark blue color, the series may have been made for export to the American market.
Condition: Very good. One 1.5″ tight hairline crack in the rim.
