Description:
A variation of the Mandarin pattern was printed on this 19″ oval platter. All of the principal elements of the Mandarin pattern, as identified by Robert Copeland, are found in this pattern: a willow tree growing at the edge of a river and leaning out to the left over the water, the tea house to the right with a smaller pavilion to its left, two birds flying and an island at the top left, with a boat propelled by a man with a pole. In this variation, the boat has a flying pennant and both the trellis with dagger border with an inner honeycomb nankin. Laurie Fuller documented a similar, but not identical, pattern in Friends of Blue Bulletin, 1973- number 46, p. 7, and named it “Bridgeless Buddleia” perhaps, in part, due to the similarity of the borders also found on the “Buddleia Nankin #1” pattern also found in this collection. There are two significant differences between this pattern and the “Buddleia Nankin #1” pattern: Here there are two flying birds and the tree is a willow, not a buddleia tree.
Condition: Very good.
