Punch Pot, Lady with Parasol Variation

Object:  Punch Pot
Pattern:  Lady with Parasol
Pattern Type:  Based on a Chinese export porcelain design
Date:  c. 1791
Dimensions:  Height:  10 in, 25.5 cm
Maker:  Unknown                   Mark:  Unmarked

A large earthenware punch pot printed in dark blue.  The monogram “RME” is painted underglaze on both the handle and spout ends; one in elegant script under the spout and the second, with the date 1791 on the handle end, in sans-serif style letters.  A decorative shell edge-type design has been painted on the spout. In this version of the pattern, a willow tree has been added on the far left.  The tree was probably added to fill in the space, as the willow tree is not found in the Chinese original, nor is it on other printed versions of this pattern.  Considerably larger than a teapot, this vessel was probably used for punch.  Punch was a hot drink made with red wine and spices.  Provence:  Cohen Collection.
