Description:
A  rare pair of earthenware sauce tureens with lids printed in blue underglaze with the Standard Willow pattern. Rarity is attributed to the unique and beautifully molded finial and handles in the shape of a bear. No other examples are known. This item was featured in Extraordinary British Transferware, 1780-1840, by R & R Halliday, p. 40, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 2012. It is also documented in Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style: 1750-1900, by Richard Halliday and Loren L. Zeller, Gomer Press, 2018.
Condition: Dish One: Very Good. Dish Two: Good. Small hairline crack to one dish. Edge of lid has been cracked and re-glued. One half of the finial has been separated from the lid and re-glued. Some nicks to the finial and handles.
