Description:
A large earthenware footed punch bowl printed in blue with the Rock I pattern. It is an early pattern, c.1795-1800, developed along with Mandarin at Spode shortly after the willow pattern. It differs from Mandarin in that there are only 3 branches on the willow tree whereas the Mandarin pattern has 4. The Rock I pattern also has high rocks at the edge of the water and an emerging boat, similar to the New Hall porcelain Emerging Boat pattern. The border of Rock I is very similar to the border on Spode’s Forest Landscape. The pattern was designed from an original Chinese export porcelain design. This example is unmarked but can be attributed to Spode. It was purchased from Robert Copeland’s Attic Collection and originally was part of the the A. G. Copeland collection and retains the original collection mark. Examples of this pattern are found on p. 51 in Robert Copleland’s book on Spode’s Willow Pattern and Other Designs after the Chinese.
Condition: Very Good. Tiny nick to the rim.
