An earthenware pierced basket and stand printed in blue underglaze in the India pattern. Designed after a Chinese pattern from the K’ang Hsi period, 1700-22, it was introduced by Spode in 1815. In the early 1800s the name “India” was often used to describe an oriental style. This pattern is also found in a multi-colored enameled form, an example of which is also in this collection. The earliest known design like this has pattern number 2489 first recorded in 1816. It is thought that India was withdrawn around 1835. In perfect condition-impressed Spode back stamp on both pieces which are marked A and B respectively. The piercings are placed low down on the sides of the basket and are based on a plain oval shape.
Condition: Excellent, only very minor wear to an edge or two. This is museum quality.
