Description:
Earthenware plate printed in blue. The border patterns were copied from an earlier Spode Buffalo pattern. The center has a beautifully-engraved armorial or badge that pertains to the Glover family of Norfolk. Pottery manufacturers often produced special order services that relied on an existing border pattern, then added a family crest to the center of every piece. This was very much in the tradition of Chinese porcelain makers who had provided this service to wealthy European clients in the 18th century. Caughley and Spode were known to produce replacements for broken Chinese-made ceramics bearing a family crest.
Condition: Very good.
