Description:
This pattern is not considered Chinoiserie. I just happened to like it, so I added it to my collection. A tall earthenware ewer printed in black in the Fallow Deer pattern and colored in under the glaze in pink, yellow, green, and blue. This is a wrap-around or continuous pattern. Fallow deer are popular animals on transferware. The Fallow Deer was spread across central Europe by the Romans. They were introduced into southern England in the first century AD. It is not known whether these escaped to form a feral colony, or whether they died out and were reintroduced by the Normans. The Fallow Deer is easily tamed and is often kept semi-domesticated in parks today”.
The pattern on this ewer is similar to a pattern by the same name made by John Rogers & Son, who produced it on dinner wares.
Condition: Very Good.
