Description:
These delightful earthenware potbellied figures that make up the cruet set have been referred to as “Prestopans” because, while they are not marked, it has been commonly held that they were made in Prestonpan, Scotland. However, according to Harry Kelley, who is known for his research and publications about Scottish Pottery, this attribution is likely incorrect. He maintains that the myth that these figures were made in Scotland began because of a full page picture in Fleming’s Scottish Pottery. It showed a Mustard Pot, Vinegar Bottle, Pepper and Salt — all with willow border pedestals. The title of the picture was “Prestonpans Ware, Smith Institute, Stirling.” The fact is that we do not know for certain where the earlier version of these figures was made, nor can we put a precise date on them. The bases and hats are printed underglaze in the Standard Willow border pattern and hand painted over the glaze. Sets were predominantly made with the jackets painted blue or rust, however, those with yellow and green jackets are known.
Condition: Mustard has a firing crack on the underside of the base. Just a couple of tiny chips to the base.
