Description:
This rare transfer-printed version of Jeb the Cobbler is printed in blue underglaze on the base with the Standard Willow border and on his apron in the Standard Willow pattern, then hand painted and decorated over the glaze in multiple colors with a small amount of guilt decoration added. One of the charming features of this example is the face of the little cat or dog that peaks out from under Jeb’s seat (see from the side view). This example is a later, and smaller version of a very popular figure made by several potteries throughout the 19th century. The figure is one of a pair, the second being the cobbler’s wife Nell. While these figures would have been made for sale in pairs, I was never successful in acquiring Nell with the willow pattern. I do know of one. Other non-printed examples can be found from time to time. An example of Jeb acquired privately in December 2008 for $1,000. It is probable that the figure was made by James Kent, although the figure is unmarked.
Condition: Very fine.
