Description:
A rare earthenware hot water jug printed in blue underglaze in the “Steed” or “Galloping Horse” pattern. An earlier version of the pattern is attributed to Dudson on the basis of matching border pattern shards found at the factory site and shown in FOB Bulletin 68, page 8. No patterns were marked at Dudson in the first half of the 19th century as the factory primarily produced wares to assist other potteries in meeting production requirements. That example looks like the later version and is attributed to Richard Dudson on the basis of shards. This item was featured in Extraordinary British Transferware, 1780-1840, by R & R Halliday, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 2012. It is also documented in Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style, 1750-1900, by R. Halliday and L. Zeller, Gomer Press, 2018.
