Description:
A large earthenware covered jug printed in blue underglaze with the Buffalo pattern. Strainer in spout would indicate that it was used to hold cider or other liquids that contain material that needed to be strained while pouring.  Buffalo, one of the earliest Chinoiserie patterns, was made by several different potteries in the late 18th century. Its popularity continued for about 50 years. The source for this pattern was an original Chinese painted porcelain design.
Condition:  Very good. One small chip on the underside of the lid (see image).
