Description:
This earthenware jug has an unusual pattern, provisionally named Cameleopard and Rider, printed in chrome green underglaze with brown enameling on the rim of the jug. In the 1820s chrome green became available as a color for underglaze printing. While Chinoiserie patterns were generally used earlier, the use of chrome green on this jug suggests an early 1820’s date. The animal on which the figure is mounted is somewhat reminiscent of the Cameleopard illustrated and described in Bewick: History of Quadrupeds p. 118. The outer border has a floral and botanical motif while the inner border is geometric in design.
Condition: Good. 2″ hairline in the collar of the jug.
