Description:
This earthenware jug has an unusual pattern, provisionally named Cameleopard and Rider, printed in blue underglaze with ochre enameling on the rim of the jug. The animal on which the figure is mounted is somewhat reminiscent of the Cameleopard illustrated and described in Bewick: “History of Quadrupeds” p. 118. The outer border has a floral and botanical motif while the inner border is geometric in design. This jug is featured in the Friends of Blue Bulletin No 138, page 5. See J54b for a similar jug printed in chrome green.
Condition: Good. Restoration to the beek and collar of the jug.
