Description:
A fine earthenware jug with molded loop handle printed in black underglaze and painted overglaze in multiple colors on a rust red ground. This jug has four distinct patterns found in cartouches, each with a different scene: One comprised of a large bird of prey pursued by a dog. The dog appears to be protecting a nest of eggs belonging to a swan seen in the lake below in a rural setting. The pattern on the opposite side is of four exotic birds. The third pattern, found in a cartouche under the spout consists of an idyllic rural scene with two lovers walking by a lake. Floral spays fill the fourth and final cartouche. A floral and botanical border is used on the inner and outer rims with the latter containing small cartouches of exotic birds. This lovely form is unmarked and the maker is not known.
Condition: Very Good: some rubbing around the rim and on the handle. Small underglaze chip to the base.
