Description:
An earthenware Dutch-shaped jug with the House Guest pattern. This pattern contains many elements and appears to tell the story of the arrival of a house guest (the woman seated in the boat holding a fan who is arriving at the elaborately decorated home of her hosts). Standing to greet her is a well-dressed lady who holds a fan in one hand and an object in the other. Two other figures in the household observe the woman’s arrival. Also observing her arrival is a neighbor who sits in his gazebo across the river. Seen in the background are elaborate pagodas and several tall towers. Many of the buildings are adorned with smiling sun faces and crosses, suggesting a transitional Chinoiserie design. A vase with large flowers on one side and a spray of large flowers on the other side complete the pattern. The border is made up of flowers and contrasting elements and is repeated on the inside of the jug. While the maker is unknown, there are stylistic similarities between this pattern and the one titled “Ceylon Temple” which is found on a dinner plate in this collection.
Condition: Very Good. One .25″ chip to the edge of the spout and a .125″ chip to the rim that have been modestly restored.
