Jug, Opium Smokers
Item Number: J56
Shape Type: Ewer
Pattern Name: Opium Smokers
Date: c. 1810-1820
Dimensions: H 9″
Maker: Unknown
Maker’s Mark: Unmarked
Description:
An earthenware ewer printed in blue underglaze with the Opium Smokers pattern. Possible attribution to Masons. The pattern name appears misleading because the people in the pattern are apparently not smoking opium, since the one pipe shown is not an opium pipe. From a source print: “Chinese Gentleman”, plate 28 from Thomas & William Daniell’s A Picturesque Voyage to India by the Way of China, 1810. Plates 34 (“Chinese Lady”) & 39 (“View in a Chinese Garden”) were also used. This pattern is recorded in the TCC Pattern Database.
Condition: Good. A 1″ chip to the inside rim has been professionally restored.
