Description:
An earthenware jug printed undergalze in blue with the Precarious Chinaman pattern on one side and the Tall Lady and Boy Fishing on the other. The source for the Precarious Chinaman pattern is a Jean Pillement design published on page 50 in Robert Sayer’s “The Ladies Amusement” dated 1759. This unusual pattern consists of three figures. The central figure, with a pointed hat, is seen precariously leaning against a decorative wall or fence. One of the other figures shades him with an umbrella. The source for the second pattern is unknown. Although the jug is not marked, the design on the outer border, known as the Corn and Husk Border, and the Fan and Lattice pattern on the inner border are recognized Cambrian Pottery borders.
Condition: Very Good. Sm hairline in rim restored. One small kiln rub in the border, some ware on the handle.
