Jug, Ship Chinoiserie Pattern
Item Number: J91
Shape Type: Jug
Pattern Name: Ship Chinoiserie
Date: c. 1810-1820
Dimensions: H 8.75″
Maker: Unknown
Maker’s Mark: Unmarked
Description:
An earthenware jug printed in blue with the Ship Chinoiserie pattern. While the pattern is similar to the Flagbearer II pattern, the border is entirely different. The outer border is printed with the Butterfly pattern. The inner border is an unknown Chinoiserie design. The addition of a sailing ship, positioned under the spout of the jug, sets it apart as a unique pattern. While sailing ships are often found on Welsh jugs, it is not common to find the ship pattern combined with a Chinoiserie pattern. This item was featured in Extraordinary British Transferware, 1780-1840, by R & R Halliday, p. 251, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 2012 and in Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style, 1750-1900, by R.
