Description:
A fine and early tall transitional Chinoiserie Dutch shaped earthenware jug printed underglaze in a smoky brown. A second jug identical in shape but printed in blue is also in this collection (see J165) and likely made by the same factory. Each is printed with the same two patterns, Temple Garden, and The Temple Steps. Ocher enameling was added to the rim of this jug. Line and stipple engraved prints result in subtle variations in color. The combined floral and geometric border design point to a transitional Chinoiserie pattern. This pattern combines many different elements inviting the viewer to create his or her own story. A similar, if not exact, jug is shown without a name in True Blue, case 3/6, page 100. Ocher enameling to the rim.
Condition: Very Good: Minor rubbing to the handle and on .25″ chip to the base.
