Description:
An earthenware barrel shaped mug printed in blue with the Chinese Figures and Laughing Dog pattern. The interesting pattern on this mug provides insight into how some factories relied on printed sources to create new designs. In this case, three separate Pillement prints were used to construct this panoramic scene. The designer added the bell ringer who stands on the bridge and a playful dog at the center bottom. The three source prints, all from Robert Sayer’s The Ladies Amusement, first published in 1758 and then again in 1762, continued to provide inspiration for patterns well into the 19th century and beyond. It should be noted that this pattern has been attributed by some to the Cambrian Pottery, Swansea.
Condition: Very Good.
