Description:
An earthenware cylindrical mug printed in black with colors painted in underglaze. Ocher enameling on the rim. This unusual transitional Chinoiserie design borrows much from the early Net Pattern, produced by Spode, Ridgway and Herculaneum. It copies two of the boat scenes, one on each side of the mug, as well as the elaborate floral pattern. The large floral and leaf medallion centered between the two boat scenes on the mug varies from the Net Pattern center medallion on the earliest pieces and the net design itself is not present on this mug’s pattern. However, this floral pattern is a perfect match to one found on the large foot bath jug by an unknown maker, also in this collection. The inner border consists of a delicate string of leaves overlaid on a traditional honeycomb pattern. The handle is printed with the same floral design. It is an interesting example that demonstrates how a transitional Chinoiserie pattern borrows from a late 18th century design.
Condition: Very good. Two very small underglaze chips to the rim. Three chips under the base, not viable when placed upright. Minor rubbing on the edge of the handle.
