An early and rare pearlware mug printed in black overglaze and painted. A painted Line and Drop border was added to the rim. The pattern on this mug closely follows the Edwards and Darly source print that provided the inspiration for the pattern. This important mug is one of only a few known examples of overglaze printing on pearlware with a Chinoiserie pattern. A similar mug can be found in the Potteries Museum collection, Stoke on Trent. The design source is from “A new book of Chinese designs calculated to improve the present taste, consisting of figures, buildings, & furniture…and ornaments, & c.,” by Edwards & Darly, London, 1754.

The mug is included in “Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style”, 1750-1900 by R. Halliday and L Zeller, Gomer Press, 2018, page, 307.

Condition: Good. One 4 inch hairline professionally sealed.
