Description:
A “Stone China” (the pottery’s name for the material which is probably just earthenware) dinner plate printed in blue underglaze with the Ceylon Temple pattern. An alternate name for the pattern is “Floral Horse.” This very stylized pattern includes three Chinese figures, two women and a man, standing in front of an elaborately decorated horse, all in the bottom foreground. The horse appears to be decorated with a floral pattern which has contributed to the alternate name of the pattern. A decorative printed mark with the pattern name, “Ceylon Temple” is found on the back.  At least one example is known with a printed retailer’s mark of D Davis, Commercial Road, London. “Daniel Davis did not start in business until 1839, so the style of the pattern is in keeping with the Chinoiserie revival which took place in the late 1830’s.”  FOB True Blue, p. 103 and 61.  See D104 for a tureen with the same pattern.
Condition: Very Good. Just fine crazing all over.
