Description:
An earthenware indented plate printed in medium blue.. The border, in addition to the central scene, includes elements from a William Daniels source print published in 1804. Both this pattern and Davenport’s version by the same name contain the same main building, which does not appear in the source print. Barry Wilkinson in FOB1973, Bulletin 75, p. 5 recorded this pattern on a 13 inch dish. He noted the similarity of this pattern to Davenport’s View of the Imperial Park at Gehol. Although there is no bridge in this pattern, similarities with versions of the Bridge and Pagoda pattern are also worth noting. All of these patterns employ borders with small landscapes often repeating elements of the central pattern. In the case of this pattern, the five scenes incorporated into the border are completely different from the elements in the central pattern.
The three figures in the foreground are not direct copies, but they seem to be at least inspired by the second source print shown above, “A Chinese Lady and Her Son”.
Condition: Very good. Two minor firing flaws on the inner rim of the plate.
