Description:
An earthenware plate printed in blue underglaze with the Chinese Sports #5 pattern, one of series recorded in the TCC database. Earthenware versions are found on both dinner ware and tea wares. Minton used a narrow linear design for the border on hollow ware pieces (see the covered sauce tureen in this collection). Flat dinner ware pieces employed a wide border, as is shown here with this plate and in the case of the large platter (also in this collection), in which multiple sporting scenes are depicted. Each of these scenes in miniature, becomes a central design on other shapes. Each piece in a service portrayed a different scene with children engaged in sporting games, in this case see saw. Geoffrey Preistman attributes the series to Minton due to its characteristic Minton shapes and to the documented pattern 539 painted on bone china, see P214 for an example
Condition: Very good.
