An earthenware plate printed in blue underglaze in the Departing Traveler pattern. This is a Chinoiserie pattern that is seen occasionally and recognized by many. In FOB Bulletin #100, p. 7 (Summer 1998), the pattern is illustrated, named, and discussed. “It is an oriental scene with a traveler leaving an inn and wending his way into the unknown. Four faces watch him go, apprehensive for his safety. The long ears of his mule set against the water beyond seem to emphasize the loneliness of this intrepid traveler. Where will they be tonight?”
