An earthenware soup plate. The pattern is printed in dark blue. Enameled in brown on the rim. This variation of the Galloping Horse pattern uses the same pattern printed in the center of the bowl around the edge as the border. Another example of this pattern us recorded in this collection on a hot water jug. For more on this pattern see Loren Zeller’s article in NCS Journal Volume 29, 2013: “Animals on Printed Pots: Understanding the Role Animals Played in Early British Wares c. 1790-1820”. The Galloping Horse pattern was copied from a Chinese original porcelain pattern like this one from the Chinse K’ang His (Kangxi) period (1662-1722). The pattern is now often referred to as “The Eight Horses of Mu Wang”.
Condition: Very good.
