Description:
Earthenware, printed in blue. Some items printed in this pattern are found with the impressed Stevenson mark. The engraver’s name, ‘Wear’, appears in the pattern printed on the meat dish. The presence of Wear’s name on this dish aides in dating the piece. William Wear, first a partner in the firm Bentley, Wear & Bourne, became sole owner of the business in 1823 and continued for approximately fives years until 1828 when the company closed. Wear’s ‘signature’ is also found on a similar pattern named Chinese Market Stall (see P191 in this collection). The latter is believed to be by Stevenson as well. The border used for this pattern incorporates medallions depicting Chinese figures and these are framed with rococo style scrolls.
Condition: Very good.
