Description:
This earthenware platter is from a dinnerware series the Clews brothers. It is printed in a dark blue. The back is combed. Stevenson produced a similar series, with the weeping willow on the right side of the border. Both series are very dark blue and probably were made for the American market. Portions of the pattern were taken from a source print titled “View of the Suburbs of a Chinese City” by William Alexander, plate 38 from An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of England to the Emperor of China, London 1797. The source print for the boat is “View of the Tchin-Shan” from the same book. Michael Sack is credited with having identified these sources. The pattern and source prints are recorded in the TCC Pattern Database.
Condition: Very Good: Minor rubbing to the edge.
