Description:
footed punch bowl printed on the interior with a commemorative pattern on the occasion of the golden jubilee of King George III. The center medallion features profiles of King George III and Queen Charlotte encircled by geometric bands within a garland. Added are the words. “A King Revered and a Queen Beloved” and “Long May They Live”. The medallion is surrounded by six floral groups. The inner border is made up of diamonds between scrolls with pendants. Although an earlier version was produced c. 1793 with reference to the war with France, the absence of an anti-Jacobean slogan on this pattern, according to Battie and Turner, p. 30, is an indication that this version was produced to commemorate King George’s golden jubilee and is considered to be c. late 1809 or c. 1810. Minnie Holdway attributed this example to Hollins. See Hollins Blue & White Printed Earthenware, Morely College Ceramic Circle, London Sealprint Ltd, Longon, 2001. It has also been attributed to the Swansea Pottery. This example is unmarked. On the exterior a Chinoiserie pattern, assigned the name Fisherman with Trap (see additional images), is repeated four times. This exterior pattern also appears on a named and dated jug that is recorded in the TCC database as pattern # 1498 and is in this collection.
