Description:
Earthenware, printed in blue. The outer and inner rims were decorated with the same Chinoiserie border design. Transfer printed in the centre of the bowl is a highly-detailed engraving of a ship at full mast that flies two Union Jacks. Above the ship it reads “Succefs (sic) to the British Tars”. A tar was a 17th century-derived name for a sailor. The etymology of this word relates to the fact that sailors wore tar covered clothing making it more waterproof.
Condition: Professional restoration to the rim in at least 2 places.
