A rare earthenware spitting box printed in blue underglaze with the Bridge I pattern. This version of the pattern was used at Spode on a wide range of articles including jugs, toilet wares and general utility wares. The main feature in the Bridge patterns and not found in other Chinoiserie landscape border designs, is the drape. It is particularly dominant in Bridge I that has no inner Nankin or butterfly motif.. The estimated dates are 1800-1810. Robert Copeland used the name Bridge I as it pre-dates the bone china version of the pattern. Others refer to this pattern and the Bridge II version as “Queen Charlotte” for this pattern.
