Description:
A molded octagonal-shaped earthenware teapot printed in blue underglaze with the Three Figures Chinoiserie pattern. This unusual unidentified pattern incorporates both Asian and Continental motifs. Featured in a center cameo are three Chinese figures, a child and two adults, who appear to be engaged in conversation. The taller male figure points to the left. The female figure holds a basket while the child holds a small branch or toy. Two trees complete the small scene which is framed with a scroll border. This cameo is surrounded by a complex floral and foliage pattern with elaborately decorated classical urns. This pattern is the same as is found on a bowl also in this collection (see D38) except that the border pattern on the teapot is different. It incorporates a grape and leaf motif. The teapot collar is molded and the collar, spout, and handle are enameled in ocher. The lower part of the spout has molded leaves. It has a small oval domed strainer. Its shape is the same as the example shown in plate 897 in Berthoud’s and Maskell’s Directory of British Teapots (page 150). The pattern is recorded in the TCC Pattern Database
Condition:  Good. Several chips: One to base, one on lid, several to inside rim (not seen when the lid is on) and three to the collar.
