Description:
This earthenware soup plate was printed in blue underglaze in the “Chinese Market Stall” pattern. This is a pseudo Chinese pattern showing  figures at a market stall with a fruit vendor. An 18 inch well-and-tree meat dish with over-the-glaze enameling in two red (rust) colors and with yellow enameling on the edge in the same pattern is also included in this collection, see P55. The print on the soup dish includes the engraver’s signature “Wear Sc” found at the end of the fence in the design. The engraver was William Wear. Wear, prior to working on his own, was a member of the partnership of Bentley, Wear and Bourne who engraved copper plates for more than one factory. While this pattern is not marked, it is similar, both in style and layout, to “Chinese Traders” which is marked Stevenson and is also known with the “Wear” engraver mark.  A platter with  “Chinese Traders” and the Wear mark s also included in this collection.
