A small rare oval shape earthenware platter printed in ultramarine blue underglaze in the Tall Door pattern. The Tall Door pattern was given its name because the central doorway in the main building is proportionally very tall. This platter is considered rare because the pattern was generally only printed on teaware. In this case, a customer must have special ordered a small platter to accompany the set. Spode would not have engraved a pattern to fit the shape. In order to accomplish this piece, the printer took the largest print available to him and printed it in the center (the circular outline of this piece is clearly visible). Then he filled the gaps on either side with two more prints. This was a clever solution to the problem. This rare item is documented in “Extraordinary Transferware 1780-1840,” by R & R Halliday, Schiffer, 2012, p. 126.
Condition: Very good.
