Description:
An earthenware coffee pot printed in blue with the Buffalo pattern. Gilt decoration added to the spout, handle, and rim of the pot and lid. Line engraved. This pattern is also referred to as “Boy on a Buffalo.” Although it is not marked Spode, Robert Copeland commented on its attribution as follows: “All I can say without prejudice is that is could possibly be by Spode.” The shape looks very much like that shown in Fig. 24, p. 77 (Copeland. Spode’s Willow Pattern and Other Designs after the Chinese). The mark could be a variation of #6 (printer’s mark). These factors point to a probable attribution to Spode. The Buffalo pattern is one of the earliest to be transfer-printed on earthenware and was taken from a popular pattern found on Chinese export porcelains.
Condition: Very good condition with only two very small chips to the spout and one on the interior.
