Description:
An earthenware cylindrical mug printed in blue. The pattern on this mug is similar to another example in this collection found on a jug, however a number of variations exist, most notably, the large outer borders and smaller inner borders. A focus of both patterns are the two Chinese women, a lady and her maid who holds a parasol.  They are positioned in the center of each panoramic design. The boy found on the mug’s pattern is seen playfully jumping next to the women, while the boy in the jug’s pattern is far removed and seen observing the women from the opposite side of the fence. The landscape on the left side of each pattern is notably different. On the mug, two large palm trees shade an elaborate gazebo with stairs. The landscape features on the left side of the jug’s pattern are quite different. A close examination of the printed patterns reveals that, while the mug was printed solely with a line-engraved pattern, the jug’s pattern exhibits some early punch engraving techniques. This would suggest that the mug was produced earlier and may have served as a source for at least portions of the pattern found on the jug. It is also important to note that the handle pattern used on both the mug and the jug is identical. While not a certainty, this may suggest that both patterns were produced by the same pottery. Both the mug and the jug are documented in Chinoiserie: Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style, 1750-1900, by Halliday and Zeller, 2018, p. 309.
